Herd news in brief: Hicks makes gift to create faculty award endowment
HUNTINGTON -- Retired Marshall University professor Dorothy E. Hicks has made a financial gift to create a faculty award endowment in the College of Education and Human Services.
The fund will support the "Dr. Dorothy 'Dot' Hicks Annual Award for Teaching Excellence. It is open to current, full-time, tenured faculty in the COEHS, who can apply for the yearly recognition and $500 stipend.
The award originally was established in 2006 by Rosalyn Templeton, dean of the College of Education and Human Services. Templeton also established awards in the areas of research and service.
Hicks retired in 1999 after 30 years, serving as a professor of education and coordinator of clinical supervision of teachers.
She coached women's golf, tennis, badminton and volleyball. And she also served as chairperson of the women's physical education department. She helped develop the women's intercollegiate athletic program and served as an associate athletic director. She also was faculty representative for the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women and for the Southern Conference, of which Marshall University is a former member.
Hicks also has received the alumni association's honorary alumnus award, the university's Distinguished Service Award and the COEHS Distinguished Education and Human Service Award. She is a member of the Marshall University Athletic Hall of Fame

Registration open for Early Education Center
HUNTINGTON -- The Marshall University Early Education Center is currently enrolling 3-, 4- and 5-year-old children for the spring semester. The Center is open to the community, but discounted tuition is available for Marshall students and employees.
The program is a collaborative Pre-K classroom with Cabell County Schools. The Center is open from 7:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and follows the Marshall University schedule.
