Marshall students get tips on studying abroad

November 19, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Spending a summer or semester studying abroad may be more valuable than ever.

Kylie Gallagher, the executive study abroad advisor at Marshall University, told many students during Tuesday's Study Abroad Expo that a global economy means a broader need for experience.

"With the economy being global, any international experience that will set you apart (is valuable)," Gallagher said. "And it really sets you apart as a person."

Gallagher went to Spain during her college days and said the experience was unforgettable. She said studying abroad allows a student to be submersed in a new culture, travel and build relationships outside the country.

About 30 Marshall students study abroad each semester, Gallagher said, with the most popular spots in England and Japan.

New this year is Sydney, Australia, which was a location many students inquired about, she said. There were several study abroad programs offering experiences in many other areas, as well, including France, Latin America, New Zealand and Africa.

Students, such as David White, Jessica Cramer and Jesse Smith, had questions about what they might be able to do and how they could afford it.

Gallagher said it is more expensive, sometimes up to $18,000 for a semester. But financial aid and scholarships could knock the price down quite a bit. Jane Palmer, program coordinator for Athena Study Abroad, told Smith they offer an $8,000 scholarship.

No matter the hurdles, all said they want to experience something new.

"I want to see different things and meet new people," said Cramer, who is majoring in criminal justice and minoring in sociology. "I've thought about this for a long time. I'd like to go to Italy or England."

Students with further questions need to contact Gallagher at 304-696-2379. She serves as the advisor for all students who participate in a study abroad experience.
