Safety classes to be offered at MU pool

Jul. 22, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Come heat wave or rain the indoor pool at the Marshall University will be opening its doors for a public lesson on water safety.

The workshop entitled "Pool Safely" is part of a nationwide event sponsored by the U.S. Product Safety Commission. The event begins at 5 p.m. and will end around 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 26. The event will be limited to 50 people to keep it manageable. Parents interested in registering their children can do so at the Rec Center front desk or by contacting Phil Snyder at 304-696-6477. The event is suggested for children age 5-15 though parents can attend.

"Pool Safely is part of a national event sponsored by the U.S. Product Safety Commission," said Phil Snyder, assistant director of Aquatics and Outdoor Pursuits at the Marshall Rec Center. "This is our second year doing it. We are going to do a clinic on pool and general water safety followed by free pizza. After that we're going to be hosting a "Dive In" movie. Guests can swim or sit-back poolside and watch the movie."

The dive-in movie will be "Journey 2 The Mysterious Island." The film is an action/fantasy staring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Josh Hutcherson. It is rated PG.

Parents and children are advised to supply their own swimwear and towels. A lifeguard will be on duty for the event.

"The workshop is for parents as well," Snyder said. "They will cover things like checking to see if lifeguards are on duty and look if safety signs are posted. There are also safety tips for private pools so kids have an idea of what not to do. Also for private pool owners we recommend keeping some safety equipment around."

More information on the event can be found at the Rec Center's website at www.marshallcampusrec.com/. You can also reach the front desk at 304-696-4732.
