HUNTINGTON -- A Marshall University student and McDowell County native was awarded a meteorology scholarship last month.
Shawn Michael Cheeks, of War, West Virginia, was selected by the American Meteorological Society to receive the Mark J. Schroeder Endowed Scholarship in Meteorology.
Cheeks, a double-major in computer science and applied mathematics, who minors in meteorology, said he was shocked to learn he earned the scholarship.
"I was truly surprised when I was notified that I had received this scholarship," Cheeks said. "I couldn't do it without my network of family, friends and great professors at Marshall."
