Marshall hosting literary lecture

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University professor Slav N. Gratchev will deliver a lecture titled "Cervantes and Dostoevsky: Crossing the Boundaries of Space and Time," at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Shawkey Room of the Memorial Student Center.

In his presentation, Gratchev will examine how Cervantes' classic novel, "Don Quixote," affected Dostoevsky and his great works, specifically "Crime and Punishment," "The Idiot" and "Brothers Karamazov." His lecture is being presented by the College of Liberal Arts.

Gratchev is an assistant professor of Spanish at Marshall University but is a native of Russia.

The lecture is free.

Lions Club joins in White Cane event

HUNTINGTON -- The Huntington Downtown Lions Club will participate in the annual White Cane Day at the Cabell-Wayne Association of the Blind on Oct. 13.

This year's event will focus on health, with a number of free screenings available to the public, said Toni Walls of CWAB.

The Lions Club will provide free vision and eye pressure screenings.

The celebration will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the CWAB facility on Adams Avenue in Huntington.

White Cane Day was started in 1930 by the Peoria, Ill., Lions Club to further the idea of making a white cane with red band at the bottom for use not only as a tool, but also as a symbol of independence.
