MU luncheon helps connect with veterans

Oct. 25, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University and its veterans and military affairs office hosted a luncheon for veterans last week.

The event was meant to provide some connections to community and university programs meant to help veterans, said Dustin Murphy, the student government veterans affairs liaison and a veteran of the Iraq War.

He said there about 500 veterans attending Marshall, each with different needs. He said they brought the veterans together so they could "learn more about their opportunities here at Marshall and get help from things that they struggle with regardless if those things are linked to the university."

Murphy said he also is working to start a veterans council student organization to provide additional support for veteran students who differ greatly from traditional students.

For more information, contact Kelly Sweetman, director of Military and Veteran Affairs at 304-696-5278 or visit 133 Laidley Hall.

Murphy can be reached at murphy65@marshall.edu or 304-696-5257.
