Events begin as parents arrive

HUNTINGTON -- Students at Marshall University have been enjoying on-campus activities this week as part of homecoming, and now parents and alumni are expected to join.

The celebration continues Friday, Oct. 5, as parents arrive for Family Weekend. Check-in starts at noon in the Memorial Student Center, while a free picnic will take place outside on the plaza from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Registration for the Black Alumni Association will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. in the student center lobby, while a reception for family members and college deans will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. in the atrium inside Drinko Library.

Marshall's volleyball team will play East Carolina at 6 p.m., with free admission to parents and family members.

A champagne reception hosted by the Alumni Association and the Black Alumni Association will take place from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Marshall University Foundation Hall, home of the Erickson Alumni Center. Cost is $25 per person.

The Black Alumni Association then will host a Laid Back Friday after-party that includes, music and games from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the multi-purpose room inside the student center.

On Saturday, the 5K Alum Run takes place at 8 a.m., with registration starting at 6:30 a.m. at the Recreation Center.

At 9:30 a.m., a Breakfast with the President will be in the Don Morris Room on the second floor of the student center, and the Black Alumni Association will have a business meeting and registration in the Foundation Hall conference room at 10 a.m.

The homecoming parade starts at 11:30 a.m., followed by a tailgate blast at 18th Street and 5th Avenue at a cost of $25 per person. The parade route starts in the 800 block of 4th Avenue, then proceeds down to 12th Street, then south to 5th Avenue and then east to the football stadium.

The football game vs. Tulsa starts at 3:30 p.m., followed by the NPHC Stepshow at 8 p.m. at Big Sandy Superstore Arena.

The Black Alumni Association will host a dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the Don Morris Room, sponsored by Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.
