HUNTINGTON -- The first round of new student orientation at Marshall University begins Wednesday.

Each summer, these campus tours help incoming freshmen acquaint themselves with college life. They also help incoming students deal with the busywork that is required for student life. Students can receive their course schedules, computer accounts and student ID cards. They will meet their advisers, as well as representatives from resident services and can apply for financial aid.

The orientation sessions will take place throughout June and July. The final one will be in August.

It's not too late to register for fall classes at Marshall. Students can continue to apply to the university and be admitted to attend up until the beginning of the fall term. However, student are encouraged to apply early.

"We do not encourage late applications as there is no benefit in waiting," said Tammy Johnson, director of admissions for undergraduate and graduate programs. "All the required credentials, such as high school verification, need to be examined before the student is accepted. The amount of time needed to do this can vary from student to student. A decision on whether the student is accepted must be filed by the start of the freshman term. Some programs have specific deadlines, like the nursing program on the undergrad level, as do some scholarships and the Yeager Program.

"Graduate students should also be aware that some programs have specific deadlines," Johnson said. "Graduate programs generally require a bit more planning. When you know you are interested in a specific program, you should immediately get as much information as possible. It is only to the student's benefit to apply early. No enrollment deposit is necessary."

Incoming students are encouraged to apply to the department of resident services early, as well. The designated areas where students are housed are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. Students who are admitted earlier will have more options.

"We encourage seniors in high school to think about applying during their senior year in the fall," Johnson said. "As a guideline, students should have their choices narrowed down to two or three different schools by Christmas break. Students should ideally make a final choice by the spring. If a student follows that pattern, he or she will be admitted early in the year. By March or April that student will be open for orientation dates and other activities for incoming freshmen.

"Students should ideally begin searching during the sophomore year to gather information to narrow down what they are looking for in a school," Johnson added. "For some it may be a specific major, the size of the school, or the location of school. They should decide what factors are most important to them and what schools fit that criteria. During the summer between the sophomore and senior year students can hopefully do some college tours."

One relatively new aspect of the student application process is that students can now submit their own applications online.

"We have done online applications for freshmen a couple of years now," Johnson said. "Graduate applications are now online as well. We always tell students that it doesn't really make the application process any faster, other than the few days it may take an application to get to us through the mail. The online process is guided and information on application fees, required application means, etc., can be found on the site. Students still need to submit all of the information, and pay the application fee."

Today, more than half of incoming Marshall students apply online.

Freshman and graduate applications, general admissions information, and an undergraduate academic catalog can all be found at www.marshall.edu/admissions.
