Sep. 14, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

SOUTH POINT, Ohio -- The Lawrence County Sheriff's Office and Children's Services are conducting a criminal investigation concerning the ability of a South Point area woman to care for her children after she reported her 11-year-old son missing when she actually left the boy with friends in Huntington.

The sheriff's office received a call Thursday afternoon that an 11-year-old had been missing from the 8400 block of County Road 1, South Point, since 8 a.m.

Deputies and firefighters from Fayette and Chesapeake participated in the search for more than 90 minutes before it was discovered the boy had never been missing at all. He had been left in the care of friends in Huntington and wasn't in danger, Lawless said in a press release.

"We are very happy that the child was found in good health," Lawless said. "We are concerned about the lady's mental and physical state this morning and whether or not her children should be in her care at this time."

The child and the mother spent the night with friends in Huntington. She thought the boy was with her when actually he had been left behind, according to the release.
