Veterans program planned at Ohio University Southern
IRONTON -- Ohio University Southern will give a salute to veterans as part of its third annual Honorable Frank J. McCown Lecture Series.
The program, "Honoring Our Veterans: Past, Present and Future," will be presented from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Riffe Center Mains Rotunda on the OUS Ironton campus.
Major John Hansen will give the keynote address. He is the recruiting operations officer at the Ohio University Department of Military Science and an assistant professor of military science.
The introduction will be given by Chris Hayes, who earned a bachelors of criminal justice from OU in June 2009. Robert Pleasant, director of enrollment and student services, will deliver the opening remarks. Members of American Legion Post 433 in Ironton will present colors. OUS student Katie Owens will sing the national anthem and other special music.
U.S. Army soldier Tyler Virgin will speak about his experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Sergeant Jim Volgares, U.S. Army, Retired, will speak about local efforts on behalf of veterans. Volgares holds a bachelors degree in business administration from OU and is commander of American Legion Post 433, Ironton.
All community members are invited to attend the program and enjoy refreshments and conversation.
