News in brief: Ceremony for U.S. 52 bridge overpass set for 4 p.m. Nov. 7

SOUTH POINT -- The Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce and the Lawrence Economic Development Corporation will host a ribbon cutting to rename the U.S. 52 bridge overpass on Solida Road as the "William A. Gaskin Bridge."

The ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, with a ribbon cutting and sign display uncovering. A reception will immediately follow at the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce office.

"William Gaskin has been Mayor of South Point since 1979 and has been a crucial figure in the growth of the community," state a press release from the L.E.D.C. "He's responsible for improving the municipal park, creating a boat ramp park, resurfacing the village streets, expanding water and sewer services, and instrumental in developing the U.S. 52 overpass."

Gaskin has served on the Ohio Public Works Committee, Ohio Mayor's Association, Ohio Municipal League, Lawrence Economic Development Corporation and the Huntington/Ironton Empowerment Zone Committee to establish the Point Industrial Park.

High school to host assembly to honor veterans

SOUTH POINT -- South Point High School will host an assembly in honor of all veterans and current U.S. servicemen and women at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

All veterans and current military personnel and their spouses are invited to attend. Attendees are asked to arrive at 12:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to stay after the presentation for refreshments and conversation with school faculty and assembly organizers. Please RSVP by Nov. 8.

Workshops offered to small business owners

SOUTH POINT -- The Southern Ohio Procurement Outreach Center presents an informative workshop geared toward small businesses interested in local contracting work with the Army Corps of Engineers. The workshop is called, "How to Do Business with the Army Corps of Engineers."

This workshop is designed to instruct small business owners on the process of doing business with the Corps and the opportunity to meet with representatives from the Huntington District office. Topics will cover everything from proposals to meeting safety standards. Speakers include Deborah Czewski, Deputy for Small Business, Huntington District. The material covered will be helpful to businesses considering contracting opportunities with any federal or state agency.

The workshop will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce, 216 Collins Ave., South Point. Cost is $5, which pays for refreshments.

Fairland High School plans rummage sale

PROCTORVILLE -- A rummage sale featuring items from 12 different families is planned for 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15 in the front lobby of Fairland High School.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Fairland High School Summer 2010 Costa Rica trip and the Fairland High School 2010 Close-up trip.

Community invited to Spanish Immersion Night

PROCTORVILLE -- Community members are invited to attend Spanish Immersion Night on Thursday, Nov. 19, in the Fairland High School cafeteria. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

A Spanish dinner will be catered by Janet McCormick, owner of the Tea Room Cafe/Cafe on the Run in Proctorville. There will also be a performance of salsa dance, with salsa lessons for the audience following the exhibition dance.

A special seating section will be reserved for those guests who wish to engage in conversation in the Spanish language during the meal.

The cost is $20 per plate, or $100 to reserve a table for six. Proceeds will benefit Fairland High's 2010 trip to Costa Rica.

SEOEMS trustees meeting set for Nov. 10

JACKSON, Ohio -- The regular SEOEMS District Board of Trustees meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 10, has been canceled. The meeting is rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, at Holzer Hospital, Jackson, Ohio.

Annual International Day scheduled for Nov. 17

PROCTORVILLE -- Failand High School's Annual International Day will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the school's cafetorium and gym.

Admission is free to enjoy the entertainment and displays from more than 60 different countries. After the entertainment, community members may purchase tickets for $3 each to sample a variety of international foods.

South Point church to serve as drop-off location for Operation Christmas Child

SOUTH POINT -- First Southern Baptist Church of South Point will once again serve as a regional drop-off location for Operation Christmas Child.

People in Coal Grove, South Point, Chesapeake and Proctorville are invited to bring shoe boxes filled with gifts for needy children to the church, which is located at 110 Collins Ave., next to the South Point Post Office.

Boxes will be collected between noon and 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16, Tuesday, Nov. 17, Thursday, Nov. 19, and Saturday, Nov. 21; from 1 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18; from 1 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20; from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22, and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 23.

'Cans for Slams' event rescheduled for Dec. 11

CHESAPEAKE -- Big Time Pro Wrestling will have a debut performance in Chesapeake, Ohio, next month.

The "Cans for Slams" event is planned for 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at the Chesapeake Community Center, 3748 Ohio 7.

Admission is $8, but patrons can get a $2 discount with donation of two canned food items, which will be given to the Chesapeake Food Pantry for the holiday season.

Free hunter safety course begins Nov. 9

GETAWAY, Ohio -- A Hunter Safety Education course will be offered from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 9, 10 and 11 at the Collins Career Center, Ohio 243, Getaway.

Hunters must attend all three sessions to be certified, and they can register at the door.

The course is free.

Church to host free health fair on Nov. 7

SOUTH POINT -- The Sunrise Church of the Nazarene, located at 531 County Road 17, South Point, will host a free health fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7.

Free medical screenings will be available to the public, courtesy of St. Mary's Medical Center.

Fingerprinting for children will be provided by the Lawrence County Sheriffs Department.

There will also be door prizes, free refreshments and free giveaways for children and adults.

OUS Community Band looking for new members

IRONTON -- The Ohio University Southern Community Band rehearses on Mondays in Ironton. Anyone with high school band experience, basic music reading skills and access to a band instrument except percussion is welcome to join. All instruments are needed and new members are welcome. The band's repertoire includes a variety of musical styles and genres including rock, pop, patriotic, Irish, and seasonal. The band performs several times a year on and off campus.

Rehearsals are at 5:30 p.m. every Monday in the OUS Campus/Community building, located on the corner of 9th Street and Bob Lutz Way in Ironton.
