Young athletes to raise funds, awareness for breast cancer

November 07, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

SOUTH POINT -- The South Point Youth Soccer League's second annual breast cancer awareness and fundraising event is under way.

"Kickin for a Cure II" kicked off on Friday night with Family Fun Night at the old South Point High School gymnasium. The event included a live band, inflatables, games, food and more.

Soccer tournament play begins on Saturday, Nov. 7, and continues through Sunday, Nov. 8, at the South Point Youth Soccer League fields, located on County Road 1 across from the 7-Up plant. Athletes from age 6 to 15 will compete in the tournament. They will play on fields lined with pink paint using pink soccer balls. Teams from around the Tri-State are participating.

Throughout the tournament, visitors can purchase T-shirts for $15 each; 100 percent of the profits will be donated to breast cancer awareness and research efforts.

Raffle tickets will also be sold for $1 each or 6 for $5. Prizes -- an iPod Touch and a Nintendo DSI -- will be raffled at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8.
