IHS to present 'Hairspray'
IRONTON -- Trent Barnett, an Ironton High School senior, has learned his lines and songs for this weekend's presentation of "Hairspray." His main concern is walking along the stage at Ironton High School in high heels.
"I love acting and singing," Barnett said last week. "This is the third year I've been involved with the play. We work at it, but it's a lot of fun. This isn't the first year I've had to sing on stage. It's not that intimidating. I'm excited. I really wanted this part."
While he's been practicing his lines and songs, Barnett also has been practicing walking around the stage in high heels, a requirement for the part. "I don't know how (women) do that," he said.
Barnett plans to attend Capital University in Columbus this fall and major in business.
Kathy Price, a music teacher, is directing the play. She's directed the high school plays at Ironton High School since 2001.
"We have 63 in the cast and about 25 in the crew," she said. Public performances are planned for 8 p.m. Friday, 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in the 601-seat auditorium. Tickets cost $12.50 for reserve seats, $7 for general admission and $4 for students. Those without a ticket can call 740-532-3911, ext. 3767.
The cast will do an abbreviated performance Thursday for students from Ironton Elementary School and Dawson-Bryant Elementary, Price said.
"Being on stage can be difficult for some of them, but I think they gain confidence," Price said.
Brooke Miller, an Ironton senior, has the lead role, playing Tracy Turnblad.
"I'm very nervous," Miller said. "I've been in several other plays, but never had a speaking part. This time, I'm in every scene except one. It's a lot of work, but it's fun. I wouldn't trade it. I'm pretty excited."
Brady Birkel, a sophomore, plays a gym teacher in the play.
"I did this last year, too," Birkel said. "I just love acting. I have about five lines. I already have them memorized."
