Forest Service plans prescribed burns
BLACKFORK, Ohio -- The U.S. Forest Service is planning prescribed burns in the Ironton Ranger District of the Wayne National Forest in the next three weeks, according to a news release.
The prescribed burns are planned in Decatur, Symmes and Washington Townships in Lawrence County through Nov. 30.
Wayne National Forest Service officials are performing the prescribed burns to keep oak-hickory forest from losing dominance in southeastern Ohio, according to the release.
The forest is fire dependent, meaning occasional prescribed burning helps young oak and hickory trees to thrive, according to the release. Oak and hickory trees provide critical habitats to various wildlife species, according to the release.
