Man sentenced to 10 years for stealing copper

IRONTON -- A 30-year-old Pedro area man will spend 10 years in prison for cutting down AT&T telephone lines in rural Lawrence County last year for the copper inside, a move that left dozens of residents without phone service.

Randy L. DePriest Jr., 30, of County Road 41S, Pedro, pleaded guilty to three counts of disrupting public service and two counts of tampering with evidence as part of a negotiated plea in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court. Twenty-five other similar counts were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Judge Charles "Chuck" Cooper sentenced DePriest to the same 10-year sentence handed out earlier this year to a co-defendant, Brian K. Bloomfield, 34, of Pedro, according to County Prosecuting Attorney Brigham Anderson. Cooper also ordered the two to pay $48,508.76 in restitution in the case.

In other cases:

n Aaron Cooper, 32, of the 400 block of Solida Road, South Point, pleaded guilty to theft of a firearm, two counts of breaking and entering and three counts of misdemeanor theft. Judge D. Scott Bowling sentenced him to three years in prison.

n David C. Barry, 44, of Township Road 1257, Proctorville, pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle while under the influence and possession of drugs. Bowling sentenced him to two years in prison, fined him $2,500 and suspended his driver's license for five years.

n David L. Rowe Jr., 37, of the 500 block of Hecla Street, Ironton, pleaded guilty to failure to register and was sentenced to a year in prison. He could be eligible for judicial release after serving five months.

n Katherine E. Roberts, 25, of the 2200 block of N. 3rd Street, Ironton, admitted violating community control sanctions. She was ordered to do 200 hours of community service and continue with sanctions for four years.

n Dennis F. Walters, 33, of Ohio 217, Scottown, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering. He was placed on community control sanctions for four years, ordered to complete a program at the STAR Community Justice Center and complete 200 hours of community service. He was released on bond until a bed becomes available at STAR.

n Larry K. Dailey, 46, of the 300 block of 36th Street, Huntington, pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, resisting arrest and criminal trespassing. He was placed on community control sanctions for four years and ordered to complete the program at STAR. He also was fined $150 and ordered to do 200 hours of community service.

n Sara L. Woomer, 27, of Mason, W.Va., pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property. A presentencing investigation was ordered. Final sentencing was set for Aug. 28.

n Lena Mallar, 37, of the 2100 block of N. 3rd Street, Ironton, pleaded guilty to a theft charge and placed on community control sanctions for four years, do 200 hours of community service and continue outpatient drug counseling.

n Tina D. Peterson, 36, of Township Road 1007, Chesapeake, pleaded guilty to six counts of trafficking in drugs and one count of trafficking in marijuana. Bond was set at $50,000 and a pretrial was set for Aug. 28.

n Cory A. Brewer, 23, of Township Road 109, South Point, pleaded not guilty to felonious assault and endangering children. Bond was set at $30,000 and a pretrial was set for Sept. 4.

David B. Kyle, 47, of Private Drive 142, Chesapeake, pleaded not guilty to having weapons while under disability and cruelty to animals. Bond was set at $30,000 and a pretrial was set for Sept. 4.

n Timothy Powell, 43, of County Road 407, South Point, pleaded not guilty to improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation, criminal trespassing, aggravated menacing and menacing. Bond was set at $25,000 and a pretrial was set for Aug. 28.

n Gordon Meredith Jr., of Township Road 1336, South Point, pleaded not guilty to breaking and entering, possession of criminal tools and two county of criminal trespassing. Bond was set at $25,000 and a pretrial was set for Aug. 28.

n Michelle Brandenburg, 22, of Township Road 1336, South Point, pleaded not guilty to endangering children and obstruction of justice. Bond was set at $20,000 and a pretrial was set for Sept. 4.

n Jason Ratcliff, 34, of Township Road 1334, South Point, pleaded not guilty to possession of drugs and tampering with evidence. Bond was set at $15,000 and a pretrial was set for Sept. 4.

n Myria N. Nikolov, 38, of the 100 block of Ashland Drive, South Point, pleaded not guilty to possession of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and tampering with evidence. Pretrial was set for Sept. 4.

n Bobby Dement, 37, of Township Road 88, Proctorville, pleaded not guilty to breaking and entering. Bond was set at $10,000 and a pretrial was set for Aug. 28.

n Roger D. Bleeds, 40, of the 500 block of 22nd Street, Huntington, pleaded not guilty to possession of drugs (heroin) and possession of drug abuse instruments. Bond was set at $5,000 and a pretrial was set for Aug. 28.

n Todd M. Heel, 23, of Lucasville, Ohio, pleaded not guilty to possession of drugs. Bond was set at $10,000 and a pretrial was set for Sept. 4.

n Margaret A. Sparks, 32, of the 1600 block of Luci Mae Drive, Flatwoods, Ky., pleaded not guilty to possession of drugs. Bond was set at $5,000 and a pretrial was set for Aug. 28.
