King's Daughters takes part in Great American Smokeout at mall
ASHLAND -- One of the quickest ways to get healthier is to quit smoking.
"Within 20 minutes of stopping smoking, your heart rate and blood pressure improve," said Tom Dearing, a spokesman for King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. "Within 12 hours, the carbon monoxide levels in your blood drops, and within two weeks to three months your circulation and lung functions improve. A year after quitting, the risk of heart disease is half that of a smoker."
King's Daughters is participating in Great American Smokeout activities Nov. 19 at the KYOVA Mall, Dearing said.
"We want to be where the people are," he said.
The King's Daughters Lung Health program is hosting activities to honor the smokeout from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 19 at the mall on U.S. 60 west of Ashland.
Free health screenings will be provided, including cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, blood oxygen levels and lung function tests.
Tobacco, stroke and heart education and tobacco cessation information will be available. Appointments aren't required and fasting isn't needed.
"We have smoking cessation programs year-round," Dearing said. For more information about the classes, people can call 888-377-5362. The medical center also has a smoking cessation support group. Information about the group is available at 606-408-6400.
