Freedom Farms offering Lil' Riders classes
CHESAPEAKE, Ohio -- Freedom Farms is offering a Lil' Riders program to teach children about horses.
Classes are one hour weekly and include lessons on saddles, biology of horses, safety, types of horses, grooming, and types of disciplines. Age groups are 3-6; 7-10; and 11-14.
The class is designed for beginners, but advanced Lil' Rider classes are available for those who have already taken the course.
The seven week session is $49. Class size is limited.

OUS to host free weed management seminar Feb. 7
IRONTON -- Iron Furnace Cooperative Weed Management Area and Ironton in Bloom will present a seminar on "Managing Urban Invasive Weeds" from 6:30 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, in the Mains Rotunda of the Riffe Building at Ohio University Southern, 1804 Liberty Ave., Ironton.
The presenter will be Eric Boyda of the Iron Furnace Cooperative Weed Management Area.
The seminar is free and open to the public.
Participants will learn how to prevent and control common invasive weeds in your yard and garden, and how some plants you may be maintaining in your yard are weeds to natural ecosystems. Boyda will share easy tips for controlling invasive plants in your yard and gardens.

Gilpin of Chesapeake named to University of Charleston Dean's List
CHARLESTON -- Megan Gilpin of Chesapeake, Ohio, has been named to the Fall 2011 Dean's List at the University of Charleston.
The Dean's List recognizes full-time students who earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
The University of Charleston is an independent, co-educational, residential college with approximately 1,400 students from 30 countries and 34 states.

Chesapeake church invites pubic to services
CHESAPEAKE -- Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, at 6939 County Road 15 on Buffalo Creek Road in Chesapeake, Ohio, invites everyone to their services. Sunday School for all ages starts at 10 a.m., Worship services at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday.

VFW 9738 to sponsor spaghetti dinner Feb. 12
HUNTINGTON -- VFW 9738 will sponsor a spaghetti dinner for Green Acres Foundation to help open a lifetime endowment trust.
The dinner will be from 1 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb.12. The Cost of the dinner is $7 and will include spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert and drink.

Shawnee State offering GED courses year-round
PORTSMOUTH -- Shawnee State University, in cooperation with Scioto County Adult Basic Literacy Education, is offering courses year round to anyone in the community who is interested in obtaining their GED.
Two orientations are scheduled every Monday and Tuesday at SSU. The program is a preparation course and is completely free. The GED test itself is $40.
Ironton in Bloom trip to Biltmore Estate
IRONTON -- Ironton in Bloom is offering a garden themed escorted trip to the Biltmore Estate and Gardens in April of 2012.
The group, a 501c3 nonprofit, works to make Ironton more attractive and colorful with plants, pots, planters and education. A portion of trip fees may be tax deductible.
The trip will be Saturday, April 28 and returning Sunday, April 29. The $300 price includes roundtrip deluxe motor coach from Ironton and additional points, one night lodging, admission and guided tours at the Biltmore Estate and North Carolina Arboretum, two lunches, one breakfast, current taxes and fees and services of a tour escort. The price is based on double occupancy.

OUS Community Band seeking new members
IRONTON -- The Ohio University Southern Community Band is looking for new members.
Good players on all wind, brass, and percussion instruments are needed. Percussion instruments are provided.

Church hosting 15-day trip to Italy, Greece
SOUTH POINT, Ohio -- South Point Nazarene Church Extended Tourism Ministry is hosting a 15-day trip to Italy and Greece from June 11-25, 2012.
The trip includes airfare, transportation, accommodations, meals and 10 sightseeing tours led by a full-time tour director. VVisit Venice, Florence, Pisa, Assisi, Rome, Vatican City, Pompeii and take a night ferry down the Adriatic Sea to Greece and tour six cities including Athens.

Big Branch Church has new Sunday program
CHESAPEAKE -- Big Branch Church has started a new "Sunday in SYNC" program.
Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. age appropriate services, "In-SYNC," will happen for children, teens and adults.
Other services at the church include Sunday evening family worship at 6 p.m. and adult small group studies, Kids 4 Christ and Christians on the P.R.O.W.L (teens) at 7 p.m. Wednesdays.

Volunteer tax preparers needed
Heather Marrs, director of finance at Goodwill Industries of KYOWVA Area, Inc. helps coordinate Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Sites at Goodwill and the Scott Center.
VITA is a program of the Financial Stability Partnership (FSP) of the River Cities. Last year, more than 1,000 River Cities residents took advantage of this free service. FSP is currently recruiting volunteers for the 2012 tax season. Volunteers can be site coordinators like Marrs, tax preparers or greeters.

Shawnee State adds to program for 2012
Shawnee State University has recently added a new program for the spring semester of 2012.
The university will be one of five in the United States to offer the International Service and Peace Corps Prep Program.
