Bridge replacements planned in Lawrence County
IRONTON -- Lawrence County is planning to replace a dozen bridges this year, said County Engineer Doug Cade.
More than 40 of the 329 bridges the engineer's office is responsible for are rated as poor or worse, and another 150 are rated as structurally obsolete, Cade said.
The engineer's office already has completed a bridge along Elkins Creek in Aid Township, he said. That project was done for about $8,000, he said. A bridge along County Road 201S also was replaced earlier this year. That project cost about $35,000.
Work is scheduled to start next week to replace a bridge along County Road 22 (Lawrence Street Road), a $1.3 million project. The bridge over Storms Creek in Upper Township is in an area where two people died several years ago. The project calls for the bridge to be elevated out of the floodplain and nearly double in size from 50 to 98 feet long.
"We generally have about $650,000 a year for bridge replacements," Cade said. However, he was able to get an 80 percent grant for the Lawrence Street Road project. The Ohio Department of Transportation is working on that project for the county, he said.
Work on two more projects could begin in June, he said. Those projects include a bridge replacement along a tributary of Cannons Creek in Elizabeth Township. The project will cost an estimated $38,000, he said. The other project is along a stream in Aid Township. That project also has an estimated $38,000 price tag, Cade said.
"We do bridge inspections annually," Cade said. "We generally start the week after schools close for the year. We can put in a (precast) box-style bridge in less than a day. Using pre-case box culverts, we've been able to cut some projects down from three weeks to three days."
A bridge replacement project over Big Branch Creek in Union Township is scheduled for July. That project will cost an estimated $48,000.
Projects on tap for August include a bridge replacement over Bear Creek in Union Township. The project will cost about $70,000. Also scheduled that month is a project along De Loss Creek in Lawrence Township. It will cost an estimated $65,000.
Other projects include a bridge replacement along County Road 69 over Indian Guyan Creek. The project will cost about $78,000. Another project is scheduled in September over Bent Creek in Union Township, a $15,000 project.
Cade said he hopes to move up several bridge replacement projects set for 2014 and get to them later this year. They include projects in Perry, Aid, Lawrence and Fayette Township.
