Lawrence voters head to the polls Tuesday

November 02, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

IRONTON -- Several statewide issues, four local levies and races for local school boards, city and village councils and township seats will be on the ballot when voters in Lawrence County's 84 precincts go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Lawrence County Board of Elections already has received more than 4,000 absentee ballots, but turnout is expected to be light. "It's been pretty smooth so far," said Kathy Overbeck, director of the board of elections. "We'll probably be lucky to end up with a 20 percent turnout."

The only statewide amendment getting much interest on campaign ads is the issue about allowing casino gambling at several sites, including Cincinnati and Columbus.

Voters in four communities will be asked to approve tax levies on the general election ballot. Upper Township, Lawrence Township and Chesapeake are seeking fire protection levies while voters in Coal Grove are being asked to approve a current expenses levy. Voters in Coal Grove turned down a similar levy last year.

Upper Township is seeking $37,195 per year in a renewal for its fire protection levy for the next five years. Lawrence Township is seeking $18,107 per year for the next five years for a fire levy. Chesapeake is seeking $12,698 per year for the next five years for its fire levy. Coal Grove is seeking an additional tax of $19,086 per year for the next five years.
