Illegal tire dump being cleaned up
Liberty Tire Service of Groveport, Ohio, began removing about 5,000 scrap tires dumped illegally in Coal Grove, Ohio, on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013.
COAL GROVE, Ohio -- Liberty Tire Service of Groveport, Ohio, began removing about 5,000 scrap tires dumped illegally at a parcel off County Road 6 north of Coal Grove, Dan Palmer, director of the Lawrence Scioto Joint Solid Waste District, said Wednesday.
The scrap tire removal project, expected to take two months, is being paid for by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, Palmer said. "It's a massive cleanup," he said.
The scrap tires will be transported to the Columbus area and be recycled for mulch for playgrounds, Palmer said.
"We haven't been able to determine who dumped the tires illegally," he said.
He asked anyone who sees tires being transported at night to call his office at (740) 532-1231.
