Breakfast to recruit help for Relay for Life

Jan. 17, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

PROCTORVILLE -- The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Lawrence County will host a community kick-off by serving up pancakes for anyone interested in learning more about Relay For Life and how to get involved.

This event will be at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds in Proctorville, from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Jan. 26. Everyone is welcome.

The Relay For Life kick-off is an opportunity for all Lawrence County residents to come together, eat, laugh, share and discuss ideas for the overnight community celebration scheduled May 18-May 19, where individuals and teams camp out, barbecue, dance and take turns walking around a track relay-style to raise funds to fight cancer.

At nightfall, participants will light hundreds of luminaria around the track in a ceremony in memory of friends and family members lost to the disease and to honor cancer survivors.

"For the Kick-Off, we hope to have all of our returning teams come and register, new teams come and register, as well as anyone interested in learning more about Relay for Life," said Melanie Kerstetter, who is the chair of the Lawrence County Relay for Life.

Kerstetter said she is always in need of new planning committee members and volunteers.
