About 150 new positions coming to industrial park
SOUTH POINT, Ohio -- About 150 news jobs are heading to The Point, a South Point industrial park, in the next two months or so, said Jeremy Clay, director at the industrial park.
"We hope to have a certificate of occupancy this week" on the new Intermountain Electronics building under construction at the 500-acre industrial park, Clay said earlier this week.
Intermountain Electronics, a Utah-based company, is spending some $4.4 million in the project that will bring 18 jobs initially and up to 35 in a few years. The company makes electronic transformers used in the industrial and mining-related activities, Clay said. The certificate of occupancy will allow the company to move equipment in and start some business activities at the 60,000-square-foot building.
"They've already started some hiring," Clay said. "They plan to be up and running in March."
Some 112 jobs are expected at a 75,000-square-foot building along Commerce Drive. Signs were erected at the site this week saying the company to be locating there is FedEx. The building is being erected by Scanell Properties, the largest builders of FedEx distribution centers. The company has made no formal announcement of the project as yet.
The building could be ready by April, Clay said.
The Lawrence Economic Development Corporation is overseeing development at the industrial park. Economic development directors are in negotiations to bring companies into two unoccupied shell buildings at the industrial park. If contracts are signed, it could bring another 100 jobs to the industrial park, said Bill Dingus, executive director of the development corporation.
One of the shell buildings was completed in 2010. It has 60,000 square feet of space. The other building is about 30,000 square feet. It was finished earlier this year.
"It's very likely we'll start at least one more shell building this year," Clay said. Once economic development officials sign another company to locate in the industrial park, work will begin on another shell building, he said.
Industrial park officials also are looking to market the 56,000-square-foot building formerly operated by Chatham Steel. The company leased the building and operated there for about a year until closing earlier this year. The closing cost about 20 local jobs.
"I don't think we'll have a problem filling the building," Clay said. "It's only a year old."
