Name of dead inmate released

Dec. 18, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

IRONTON -- The name of a Lawrence County Jail inmate who died Friday was released Monday, but the results of a preliminary autopsy currently are being kept under wraps.

Steven J. Conley, 23, of Kitts Hill, complained of an illness early Friday and was transported by ambulance to St. Mary's medical complex in Ironton where he was pronounced dead.

Lawrence County Coroner Dr. Kurt Hofmann sent the body to Franklin County for an autopsy Sunday afternoon. The autopsy was scheduled Monday, according to a press release from the office of Sheriff Jeff Lawless.

"I can't comment at the present time" about the preliminary results of the autopsy, Hufmann said Monday. "We hope to make a comment in a few days."

A complete autopsy report won't be ready for several weeks, according to the release.

"The toxicology may not come back for 10 to 12 weeks," Hufmann said. It is routine to request toxicology results in an autopsy, he said.

Conley was indicted earlier this year on charges of complicity to aggravated robbery and trafficking in drugs, according to the office of Prosecuting Attorney J.B. Collier Jr. His case was set for trial in January.

Lawless has requested an independent investigation of the death by the Buckeye State Sheriff's Association.

In an earlier release, Lawless said he doesn't suspect foul play in the case.

"We are deeply saddened by this loss," Lawless said in a prepared release. "My thoughts and prayers are with the family."
