Man suspected of robbing banks in two Ohio counties
IRONTON -- The same man is being sought in connection with bank robberies in two Ohio counties in the past week, according to Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless.
The U.S. Bank in Proctorville was robbed Monday while the Charter One Bank in Wheelersburg was robbed Friday, according to law enforcement officials in Lawrence and Scioto counties.
A warrant was filed Tuesday in Portsmouth Municipal Court for the arrest of Elvis P. Kerns, 34, of Wheelersburg, according to a news release from the office of Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini. The Lawrence County sheriff's office is in the process of obtaining a similar warrant, Lawless said.
Kerns is described as being 5 feet, 11 inches tall with brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen driving a 1990 gold Chevrolet Cavalier with Ohio registration FTK 1183.
The vehicle has a sticker in the back window that supports coal miners. It also has tinted windows, according to the release. It was last seen in the Cross Lanes, W.Va., area, according to the release.
Kerns was released from prison in December on unrelated charges, according to the Scioto County release.
"Both robberies had a similar suspect and modus operandi," Lawless said.
Anyone with information about Kerns is asked to contact Detective Aaron Bollinger in Ironton at 740-532-3525 or Detective Jodi Conkel in Portsmouth at 740-351-1091.
