Fired cop makes Ironton City Council

IRONTON -- Beth Rist, a fired Ironton police officer, will have a new job next month as a member of Ironton City Council.

Rist joined former Mayor Bob Cleary, Mike Lutz and Dave Frazer as new Ironton City Council members, according to unofficial results with 83 of 84 precincts reporting Tuesday night at the Lawrence County Courthouse. A precinct in Windsor Township was the last precinct with votes still to be counted.

Lutz led the ticket with 1,520 votes, to 1,343 for Cleary, 1,241 for Rist and 1,227 for Frazer. Leo Johnson finished with 1,217 and Hugh Donald Scott finished with 1,132.

Rist lost her job last year, but was ordered reinstated by a state arbitrator. The city has appealed the ruling and the case is pending.

Chesapeake residents, meanwhile, voted to approve a fire levy by a total of 161 to 61. Two other fire levies also were approved in Lawrence and Upper Townships. In Upper, residents voted to support the fire levy by a total of 373 to 200 while Lawrence Township residents voted for the levy by a total of 492 to 119.

Coal Grove voters turned down a current expenses levy for the second year in a row by a total of 412 to 337.

In a close race in South Point, Rita Vance had 1,057 votes and Les York had 1,055 in for two seats on the South Point Board of Education. Rose Christian finished with only one vote less, 1,054 and Terry Blake had 831.

Jason Gorby was unopposed in the race for an unexpired term on the Fairland Board of Education. In the race for three other seats on the board, Matt Ward had 1,212 votes, Martin Appleton had 1,008 and Gary Sowards had 941. Lester Brumfield Jr. had 629 votes, Greg Crabtree had 461, Timothy W. Fisher had 414, Brian Morgan had 833 and Janice Singer had 432.

In the race for Dawson-Bryant Board of Education, Jamie Murphy had 792 votes, Debra Drummond had 732 and Sadie Mulkey had 670. Gary Dutey finished with 647 votes, Katy Ford had 586, Michael Nourse had 442, Denise Paulus had 555 and Tim Stormes had 276.

A. Burton Payne, former county coroner, had 1,613 votes for Ironton Board of Education and Jay Zornes had 1,375 to win seats on the board. Daniel Hartwig had 815 votes and Jerry L. Brownstead had 578.

In the Chesapeake Board of Education race, Bill Pratt had 1,152 votes and Jerry R. Osborne had 1,021 to win two seats on the board. Kenneth W. Wolfe had 490 votes and Bill Pratt had 254.

Robert Armstrong, David Classing, Dann A. Smith and Ronald West all won seats on South Point Village Council while Brenda Chapman, Larry David Peters, Raymond W. Shephard and Justin Wurtzler won seats on Proctorville Village Council.
