Operation TLC ready for year's 1st cleanup

Mar. 14, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

CHESAPEAKE -- Operation TLC (Tidy up Lawrence County) has planned its first cleanup of 2013 for Saturday, March 16.

Volunteers are invited to come to the Chesapeake Community Center by 8:45 a.m. for free coffee and donuts, as well as free T-shirts for first-time participants.

From the Community Center, teams will fan out from Chesapeake to Rome Township to clean up litter along the roads and highways. Throughout the cleanup, runners will distribute trash bags, gloves and water to volunteers as needed.

Operation TLC co-founder and President Billie Smith says this is a community-wide effort and it will take a lot of hands and litter grabbers to get the job done. Smith founded TLC as a grassroots effort to beautify Lawrence County, specifically the eastern part of the county. After living away from the area for many years and then returning to her beloved home county, she said she was saddened to see how much trash had been carelessly tossed along the roads and the riverbank, making the once-beautiful area appear dirty and dilapidated.

Smith encourages anyone who wants to make a difference to join Operation TLC.
