According to the National Safety Council, in 2004, the number of deaths from motor vehicle accidents was 44,933. The number of deaths from accidental falls, drowning, electrocution, fire, forces of nature, and other non-transportation accidents was 63,959.
Those are just a few of the alarming statistics about death due to accidents and injury. That is why the Safety Adventures Committee hosted a Safety Adventures Day for local fifth-grade students Friday, May 9, at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds.
The Safety Adventure Committee believes it is very important that young people learn about ways they can help create a safe environment in at home, at school, while traveling with family and friends and how they live their everyday lives. This event was a way to help educate the students on how they can do this.
The event started with a mock accident involving several Fairland High School Students from the CLICK Club. A wrecked car, donated by Chet's Auto Parts, was used for the accident. The fifth- graders were given a brief description of an accident scene and witnessed what happened after the 911 call was placed. Rome Volunteer Fire Department, South East Ohio Emergency Medical Services, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol all responded to the scene. The Safety Adventures Day Committee felt it was important for the students to understand what happens when a person or people are involved in an accident.
Once the mock accident was over, the students were allowed to visit various presenters set up around the fairgrounds with displays and equipment to see how their agency deals with emergencies and how to prevent them from happening.
Presenters included: the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department; Ohio State Highway Patrol; SEOEMS; Rome Volunteer Fire Department; Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste District; South Hills Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation; Buckeye Rural Electric Co-op; Lawrence County Emergency Management Agency; Lawrence County Farm Bureau; Lawrence Soil and Water Conservation District; Fairland High School CLICK Club; Cabell Huntington Hospital; and Health Net. Information the students learned about included fire safety, seatbelt safety, environmental safety, emergency services, firearms safety, hunting safety, ATV safety, electrical safety and more.
At lunch, the students participated in an egg drop contest. Each class could design a container to hold an egg to be dropped from the top of the grandstands at the fairgrounds. The winning class received a pizza party donated by E.L. Robinson Engineering, Doug Cade. There were several great entries. Congratulations to Mr. Watts' class of Burlington Elementary with the winning design of bubble wrap.
The students were also able to participate in several different poster contests. The winners of the contests received $25 for first place, $15 for second place, and $10 for third place. The awards for this contest were donated by the South Hills Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. The winners were as follows:
WATER SAFETY: First place, Ariel Brumfield, Chesapeake Middle; Second place, Justin Lambert, Chesapeake Middle; Third place, Katie Roach, St. Lawrence School.
