WILLOW WOOD, Ohio -- Emily Bowling doesn't have a lot of free time on her hands these days.

The Symmes Valley High School senior has been named valedictorian, will graduate summa cum laude and has gotten a scholarship to The Ohio State University that will pay for her tuition. She plans to major in biology and become a pediatrician. Bowling also has played softball, volleyball and basketball all four years of high school and was the captain of those three teams this year.

"Volleyball is my favorite sport," Bowling said Tuesday. Her mom, Becky Bowling, is the volleyball coach. "She's a good coach."

Bowling has received several other scholarships from Ohio State, as well as a $500 scholarship from the 2008 Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association.

"I'll use it for books or towards room and board," Bowling said of the volleyball scholarship.

The 5-foot-8 Bowling is a shortstop on the softball team, played guard on the basketball team and was a hitter on the volleyball team.

"I'm proud of her," said Becky Bowling. "She played varsity all four years." The mom and daughter coach and player dynamics "was probably harder on her than on me."

Emily Bowling had a 4.0 average all four years in high school, according to her mother. She'll also graduate first in her class of 72. She also serves as senior class president.

She participated in a number of school- and community-related organizations including the National Honor Society, the Beta Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Bowling also served on the yearbook staff, is a member of Oakland Chapel Youth Group, All-Ohio Underclass tournament team and the Quiz Bowl. She also collected money for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life as a team captain and was a delegate for the People to People Student Ambassador program.

She is a Ronald McDonald house volunteer, participated in the Building Bridges leadership and diversity conference and served on the Angel Tree Committee to provide needy children with Christmas gifts.

In basketball, she was named second team all-conference for two years and second team all-district as a junior. In softball she was named first team all-conference for three years and was district softball player of the year in 2007. In volleyball, she was first team all-conference for two years.
