Demolition Derby signups set for Saturday
ROME TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Sign up for the demolition derbies scheduled as part of the Lawrence County Fair this summer will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 17, at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds.
Anyone wishing to participate in the demolition derby needs to preregister, said Doug Clark, president of the Lawrence County Agricultural Society which oversees the fair.
Ironton High to host United Way Walk-A-Thon
IRONTON -- A United Way Walk-A-Thon will be from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Ironton High School Track.
Jason Sayre, a Ohio University Southern Campus student, is organizing the event. Walkers will receive a free T-shirt and have the opportunity to win door prizes. Those interested in sponsoring a walker and/or walking in the event can pre-register by calling 740-533-7636 or e-mail to UWwalk2008@hotmail.com. All proceeds will benefit the Lawrence County United Way partner agencies. The entry fee is $10.
Two-day employment workshop sponsored
IRONTON -- A special two-day employment assistance workshop will be hosted and conducted by the Lawrence County One Stop/Workforce Development Resource Center.
The seminar is scheduled for May 28-29 at 120 North Third St., Suite D. The first day's event will feature job search strategies from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The second day will concentrate on improving interview skills with employers from 1-3 p.m.
The workshop is designed to help Tri-State military veterans analyze their work skills, attitudes and military occupational specialties and relate them to the civilian work force.

Nature Center presents reptile program, lecture
IRONTON -- The Ohio University Southern Nature Center will be presenting its monthly reptile program and lecture at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 17.
The event will be at the OU Southern Nature Center located at Lake Vesuvious in Ironton, Ohio.
The Program will be presented by Herpetologist Larry Cartmill and will feature a demonstration with venomous and non-venomous snakes of the Tri-State. It is open to the public and free of charge.
