The Southeastern Ohio Safety Council had its annual awards banquet April 22, and handed out some honors to local businesses and organizations.

The University of Rio Grande sponsors the Southeastern Ohio Safety Council, which assists local business and organizations with reducing their workmen's compensation costs, in addition to helping them with safety issue. The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation is encouraging businesses and organizations around Ohio to join the safety councils in their regions.

Aaron Quinn, campus safety director at Rio Grande, spoke at the awards luncheon, which was held in the Davis University Center on the Rio Grande campus. He discussed issues such as safety on campus, encouraging employees to take pride in their workplaces, and stressing personal safety. Personal safety issues are as important locally as they are in the bigger cities, and Quinn gave those in attendance information on how they can stay safe.

The Southeastern Ohio Safety Council meets regularly and discusses a wide range of safety issues that are important to area residents and area employers. For example, a Safety Council meeting may focus on how area residents can keep safe on their all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). This may not seem like an important workplace safety issue, until one considers how much work time is lost when employees are unable to work because of ATV accidents. This topic is also important for area residents who enjoy riding their ATVs and want tips on avoiding accidents.

The May meeting will feature information from the Gallia County Soil and Water Conservation District on safety with herbicides and pesticides.

At the April 22 meeting, awards were given to several businesses and organizations for safety issues.

The Group Awards, presented to the companies with the lowest incident ratings in each group, went to the city of Jackson, Gallipolis Development Center, Southeastern Ohio EMS District, Stockmeister Enterprises, Inc., Thermal Solutions and the University of Rio Grande.

The Achievement Awards, given to companies that decrease their incident rates by 25 percent over the year, were presented to Area Agency on Aging District 7, Buckeye Community Services, Inc., Gallipolis City Schools, Holzer Medical Center, Jenkins Memorial, Pepsi Cola Bottling Co., Ohio Precious Metals LLC, Thermal Solutions and the Village of Pomeroy.

The 100 percent awards, given to companies that for one year have no workplace injuries or illnesses that result in a day away from work, were presented to A.J. Stockmeister, Inc., Area Agency on Aging District 7, Inc., Blue Grass Cooperage Co., Inc., Brown Electric Company, Inc., Dr. Samuel L. Bossard Memorial Library, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Meigs County Council on Aging, Inc., Meigs Local School District, Pepsi Cola Bottling Co., Refco, Southeast Ohio EMS District, Southern Cabinetry, Inc., Stockmeister Enterprises, Inc., T&R Logging LLC, Thermal Solutions and the University of Rio Grande.
