HURRICANE -- The city of Hurricane will pay its bills, but following a heated special meeting of City Council on Monday night, a local public relations executive who was in the audience says it's time for the city to go into "damage control mode."

Nominations Being Accepted for Mayo Lester Service Award
WINFIELD -- The Putnam County Board of Education held its ground on Tuesday, defending its position in hiring an out-of-county resident to coach baseball at Buffalo High School.
WINFIELD -- A successful Putnam County Schools' program will be upheld to other schools as a model during the 2009 Blue Ribbon Schools Blueprint for Excellence National Conference in Florida in December.
POCA -- Nearly 100 Putnam County residents gathered in a spirit of gratitude at the 15th annual "For This We Give Thanks" Putnam County luncheon on Tuesday at Wellington's of Scarlet Oaks.
MARY ELIZABETH SHORT, 93, of Hurricane, W.Va., was ushered into the Throne Room of the Heavenly Father on Thursday, November 12, 2009 in Teays Valley Nursing Home. "She fought the good fight." Funeral services will be were Saturday, November 14, 2009, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington with Rev. Phil Wilson officiating. Burial followed in Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock, W.Va. She was born February 28, 1916, in Elkins, W.Va., a daughter of the late John Wesley and Maggie Carr. Also preceding her in death were her husband, Oscar Joe Short; a son, Billy Short; a granddaughter, Sandra L. Martin; and two grandsons, James "Jim" Edgar Dailey, and Philip Charles Dailey. She was a homemaker and a 64-year member of the First Huntington Christian Baptist Church of God. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and James Edward Dailey of Huntington; two grandsons, Stephen Dailey and his wife Teresa of Milton, W.Va., and Shawn Short of Lavalette, W.Va.; one granddaughter and her husband, Misty and Jason Queen also of Lavalette; nine great-grandchildren; seven great- great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; and two very, very special friends, Wanda Wells and Jackie Ferguson. The family has requested donations be made to Christian Baptist Youth, c/o Josh Blevins 182 Edendale Road, Portsmouth, OH 45662. HURRICANE -- The rustle of taffeta was drowned out by the giggles of girls of all ages at the Dine with Disney princess pancake breakfast on Saturday.

GRAYSON, Ky. -- An investigation into the murder of three people in Carter County earlier this week is continuing, but no one has been charged, said Lt. James Shelton of the Kentucky State Police.
The regularly scheduled Nov. 17 meeting of the Putnam County Planning Commission was canceled due to lack of agenda items. The meeting was intended to be a regular monthly meeting, not a public forum to discuss the county's strategic 10-year plan. Incorrect information appeared in a story in the Friday, Nov. 13 edition of the Putnam Herald.
