Civil War Weekend returns March 21
HURRICANE — The past will come to life with the boom of cannon fire when the Hurricane Civil War Weekend returns to Valley Park Thursday, March 21-Sunday, March 24.
The annual event, which commemorates the skirmish of Hurricane Bridge and the Battle of Scary Creek, includes night firing, parade drills, Ladies Tea, Remembrance Play, Military Ball, horse-drawn wagon rides, sutlers camp, battle re-enactment and more.
A replica of the H.L. Hunley Attack Submarine will make a return visit this year.
The Civil War Weekend is sponsored by Putnam County Parks & Recreation and the Putnam County Visitors Bureau.
Other special events include:
- An Evening with President Lincoln, 6-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, in the Commons of Putnam County at Valley Park. Cost for the dinner and presentation is $25 couples, $15 adults, and children 8 and younger free. Purchase your tickets at the park office at 304-562-0518 ext. 10.
- The Hurricane Civic Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Larry Stickler from Marshall University and accompanist Tom Minshall, will perform Civil War period music at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 22, in the Commons of Putnam County.
- The annual Ladies Tea, 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, at Valley Park Community Center at Valley Park. All ladies 8 and older are welcome to attend and bring her favorite tea cup. Only 50 tickets are available. Cost is $5. Call 304-562-0518, ext. 10.
