Homeschool program announces science fair

Jan. 11, 2013 @ 10:01 AM

TEAYS VALLEY — Science fairs aren’t just the domain of public schools anymore.

The Challenge B Program — a part of Classical Conversations, a Christian homeschool community of classical educators — will host its first science fair.

Homeschooled students ages 13 to 15 will display their projects from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene. The top three competitors will qualify to compete at the regional and state levels in the spring.

All competitive exhibits will be judged on accuracy, neatness, interest, and complexity applicable to their age and grade level. They will also be judged on their research paper, presentation board, science log/journal, demonstration, and interview, according to a news release from Jenny Moss, who directs the Challenge B Program on Fridays at Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our kids to foster a love of science,” Moss said in the release.

Classical Conversations is a homeschooling organization with 667 communities in the United States; more than 19,000 homeschooled students are enrolled nationwide. There are more than 60 programs in West Virginia and Virginia in the Foundations, Essentials, and Challenge Programs.

The Challenge programs are geared for students aged 12 and older. For 30 weeks, they study six challenging subjects at home while practicing dialectic and rhetorical skills in weekly seminars. Students use the Classical Conversations curriculum, which involves Saxon Math, Apologia Sciences, Classical Literature-Exposition, Latin, Formal Logic, Mock Trial and much more. Other coursework is shared through facilitated discussions. Challenge Programs foster student development and strengthen the lifelong learning skills of exposition, debate, logic, rhetoric, and research, according to the news release.
