Kiwanis to host Taste of Putnam
HURRICANE -- The Kiwanis Club of Putnam County is planning its Third annual Taste of Putnam for noon until 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, at Valley Park.
Parking and admission are free to the public for this event, which is a showcase of Putnam County cuisine that raises money for a Kiwanis cause.
"This has become one of the signature events of spring in Putnam County," Kiwanis Club president and Chairman of the Taste of Putnam, Michael Henshall, said in a news release. "We've modeled our event after other successful 'taste' events and are excited we are able to feature the culinary achievements of our community restaurateurs."
Restaurant and vendor registrations are being accepted through April 19. Restaurants and chefs will offer sample-sized portions to patrons in exchange for event tickets purchased on site. This will allow patrons to visit a number of restaurants and try a number of dishes and items in a single location.
"The Food Guy," Steven Keith from The Charleston Daily Mail, will sample dishes and hand out awards. The winning dishes will be featured in The Daily Mail following the event. The public will also vote on favorite dishes and awards will be granted.
This year, proceeds from the Taste of Putnam will benefit the Eliminate Project, an international campaign the Kiwanis International organization has spearheaded along with Unicef in an effort to eliminate neo-natal tetanus, a very debilitating and excruciating disease that affects newborns in many poverty stricken nations. Affected infants contract tetanus during birth and die within a few days or weeks.
This is the third year the Taste of Putnam has been produced by the Kiwanis Club of Putnam County. It is endorsed by Putnam County Parks & Recreation, The Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, the Putnam County Convention and Visitors Bureau and City of Hurricane.
"The Taste of Putnam is a family event with something for everyone. Come out and enjoy a beautiful afternoon in the park with the family and sample offerings from a variety of cuisines and chefs in the area," Henshall said.
The Taste of Putnam is open to anyone who would like a commercial booth space during the one-day event. For an application to register and more information, contact Henshall at 304-993-7650. Space is limited and early registration is required.
The Kiwanis Club of Putnam County meets at 6 p.m. each Thursday at the First State Bank Community Room off of W.Va. 34 in Hurricane.
