Hurricane's Gordon Gamer of the Week

Nov. 08, 2013 @ 05:29 PM

Teays Physical Therapy Center Inc. and the Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week's Female Gamer of the Week to Anna Gordon of Hurricane High School.

The Hurricane High girls cross country team went into the State Meet predicted to place second behind Morgantown, but this was with Joie Johnston running for the Redskins. Johnston didn't run at Regionals or States due to an injury, which meant someone had to step up to keep this team in the running for a runner up position in AAA girls. That person was freshman Anna Gordon.

She ran strong in all her races this season, which pulled her into the top 15 in the runner's rankings on RunWV.com. At Regionals, she pulled out a second place and season best 19:02.83, finishing behind teammate Tori Dent and helping to lead her team to a Region 4 championship. She followed up that performance at States on Nov. 2 with a seventh-place finish with a time of 19:14.70, the best on the team and higher than any other freshman in AAA girls, which led her team to that 2nd runner up finish.

"Her overall season was incredible. She finished as the highest ranked freshman in the state in AAA and to close it out with an All State position is a great way to start her high school career," said coach Jason Hensley. "She has shown a lot of potential since middle school and she still has a lot of room for aerobic development," he finished.

Anna commented on the season saying "our team has done well all season and it carried into Regionals and States. I couldn't have done what I did without my coach and my team. My training has been very tough and demanding, but all the support from my team, family and friends was just as important to my success," said Anna.

Anna is the daughter of Greg and LeaAnn Gordon. They are her biggest supporters and have given her the drive to continue to improve though this season.

"My dad pushed me throughout middle school and he encouraged me to work even harder once I started in high school. Mom has always been supportive of me as well," said Anna. She is also part of the basketball and track team at Hurricane and is involved in the Student Council.

Look for Anna and other local area high school athletes to be named next week's Female Gamer of the Week sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center Inc. and the Putnam Herald.
