HURRICANE, W.Va. -- Putnam County Commissioner Joe Haynes and his wife Karen helped out at Lighthouse Christian Academy on Monday as part of National AmeriCorps Week.
The couple, who were recognized as LifeBridge AmeriCorps program "Members for a Day," spent time reading to students and assisting them with their studies.
AmeriCorps is a national service program that engages more than 75,000 Americans in service each year including nearly 700 West Virginians, according to a prepared release. The goal of the program is to place volunteers in schools and early learning centers throughout the state to help tutor and mentor students.
