Winfield facility to train expelled students

Jul. 26, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

WINFIELD, W.Va. -- A facility that will train students who have been expelled from their own schools is opening in Putnam County.

A ceremony was performed Thursday afternoon at the Putnam County Youth Reporting Center in Winfield, which officials dedicated as the O.C. Spaulding Training Center.

Spaulding is a retired Putnam County circuit judge. He announced in 2011 that he was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease.

The training program will provide weekday education for students determined to be delinquent and ordered there by a judge.

The Putnam County school system will provide teachers and meals for the program through an agreement with the state Division of Juvenile Services. The division will provide space, computers, security and group therapy for substance abuse, anger management, along with life and communication skills.

For more information on the program or the center, call Director David Hill at 304-395-5650.
