Concert series ends with Cathy Grant, Fiddlers Galore!
St. ALBANS -- Colesmouth Concert Series wraps up its Free Summer Concert Summer Series at St. Albans City Amphitheater with Cathy Grant & Fiddlers Galore! at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18.
Fiddlers Galore! is a constantly growing and changing group of aspiring and award winning fiddlers, of all ages, from throughout the Kanawha Valley, according to a press release.
Among the award winners appearing this Saturday is Jerrica Hilbert, 17, and a senior at St Albans High School. She won first place in the youth division at The Vandalia Gathering this year.
Jarred Carter, 13, also from St Albans, won third place this year at Vandalia.
Riley Sisco, 16, from Scott Depot, won second place last year at Vandalia.
All three of the young musicians will do solos at the concert. Many of the players faces are familiar to FOOTMAD workshops and events.
Cathy Grant grew up playing classical violin, discovered fiddling as an adult, and is now a full time workshop leader and fiddle instructor at FretnFiddle in St. Albans.
The group humorously got its name when scheduled to play "Colesmouth" several years ago. When they arrived, about 18 of them, all with violins under their arms, Series Director Jim Snyder, remarked, "Wow! We've got fiddlers galore here tonight!"
The phrase, "Fiddlers Galore!," stuck and became their name, which they proudly wear on their T-shirts when they perform.
St. Albans City Amphitheater is at the top of Observatory Drive off Kanawha Terrace in the City Park.
The concert is free. Pew-style seating is provided, although many bring blankets and chairs.
The Series has been sponsored this summer by St. Albans Parks and Recreation, Dr. Montgomery Vickers, SunValleyMusicGroup and St. Albans Monthly.
