Elementary school collects donations for St. Jude's

Twenty students in the third grade at Conner Street Elementary recently collected donations for the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Students participated in a Math-a-Thon program to improve their math skills and to collect donations to help a child's life. Students raised $1,763.86 for St. Jude's.

The top three students in amount of money collected were: Mouin Tannous, $225; Michaela Hall, $205; and Austin Hinrichs, $145.

Poca students compete in film, video awards

Students in Poca High School's film and video class competed against 21 other high schools in the Tri-State for the 2008 Electronic Media Moving Image Excellence (EMMIE) Awards at Ohio University Southern in Ironton, Ohio, on April 25. The students, under the direction of instructor Sonjia Richardson's and librarian Lynda Corns-Brady, represented Putnam County Schools at the competition.

The EMMIE competition is open to high schools with video/TV/computer animation production classes and is designed to recognize video production and computer animation excellence.

Poca's WDOT Sports Edition won an EMMIE for their entry "Sports News Feature". This feature consisted of footage from various sporting events and interviews with members of the basketball team. Creators were Hilary Gibson, Ian Humphrey, Jordan Meadows, and Adam Snyder.

Other entries from Poca were as follows:

Entertainment/Music Video - "The Best I've Ever Had" by Bethany Clinton and Justin Smith;

Multimedia Print - "Movie Biz" brochure by Lara-Jill Harmon;

Multimedia Web - "EMMIE High" by Caleb Hughes;

Video Commercial - "Hottie Pops" by Natasha Hurley and Allison Moody.

Gifted students enter tower competition

Putnam County Schools Middle School Gifted Program students, working with students in the Putnam Career & Technical Center Pre-Engineering Program, designed and built structures for the first "Wacky World of Balsa Wood Towers" competition.

The Pre-Engineering class at the PCTC provided structural expertise, equipment, and mentoring to the students as they prepared for competition. The project required students to demonstrate problem-solving, teamwork, presentation and communication, as well as math and science skills.

The culminating event for the month-long project was the competition held April 9. After designing and building the structures, 18 teams made presentations while placing weights on their structures.

The most weight held by any balsa wood structure was 130 pounds.

Superintendent Chuck Hatfield presented the following awards:

First Place: Winfield Middle 7th graders - Garrett Grafton, Brock Pence, Merryc Batt

Second Place: GW Middle 7th & 6th graders - Ben Martin, Adam Richmond, Ryan Humphrey, Gabe Garrison

Third Place: Winfield Middle 7th graders - Sequoya Bua-Iam, Mary Jorgensen, Caitlyn Miller, Tyler Holstein, Isaac Nicholas

Fourth Place: Poca Middle & Teays Valley Christian - Tanner Sigman, Quentin Buckley, Jonathan Kishpaugh, Brandon Saunders

Fifth Place: Hurricane Middle 8th - Lauren Lipinski, Elizabeth Lawhon, Cheyenne York, Ali El-Khatib

Sing and Dance Camp set for June 9-13

Winfield High School General Admission Show Choir wants to put middle school student on stage! Sing and Dance Camp is open to girls and boys from all schools who will be entering grades 6, 7 and 8 in Fall 2008.

Performers with General Admission Show Choir will teach participants 3 songs with professionally choreographed dance moves.

The camp runs from 8 a.m. to noon June 9-13. Registration before May 30 is $50, after May 30 it is $60

Lavender travel book available in stores now

CHARLESTON -- Arriving just before the cicada swarms and the summer travel season, it's "Dave Trippin: A Day Tripper's Guide to the Appalachian Galaxy of Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia," ($14.95, Lavender Publishing). The book is now available at Taylor Books and Frog Creek Books at Capitol Market in Charleston.

Lavender will appear at Taylor Books, 226 Capitol St.,Charleston, 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 9, signing copies of his new family-friendly travel book.

Fellow Huntingtonian, singer/songwriter, Jeff Ellis, who appeared in 2007 on Mountain Stage, will be singing songs from his soon-to-be-released CD from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Taylor Books.
