Putnam County has gone to the dogs
HURRICANE, W.Va. -- Dog lovers and their pets have a lot to look forward to in Putnam County on Monday, Sept. 1.
Valley Park off Teays Valley Road will host a ribbon cutting ceremony 6 p.m. Monday to celebrate the opening of the county's first dog park. This is the first of two dog parks being constructed in the area. At a cost of $3,651 for both parks, the grass-filled play areas will have two separated fenced-in chambers allowing owners to let their animals run free and play without the need for a leash. Local donors have expedited the completion, with Karen and Joe Haynes donating $1,000 and the Hurricane Animal Hospital donating $500. The Eleanor dog park is expected to open Oct. 4.
If you're looking for some way to help Putnam Parks while recycling at the same time, you are encouraged to drop off your plastic shopping bags at the park office where they will be placed in dog cleanup boxes throughout the parks for owners to use in cleaning up pet waste.
Dogs can have even more fun Monday at the Waves of Fun's third annual dog swim. The event is to take place from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. at the wave pool to close out the pool's final day of operation.
