Putnam adds restroom to Eleanor park
ELEANOR, W.Va. -- Parks and Recreation Director Scott Williamson can mark another item off his "to-do" list as a new composite-structure bathroom was delivered last week to the Eleanor's county park site.
Located opposite the swimming pool bathhouse and beside the baseball and softball fields, the facility offers a male and female restroom, each with a toilet, hand dryer, polished steel mirror and locking door. This bathroom project holds such significance because previously, county park goers had to utilize port-a-johns that Williamson said has been a target for pranksters to frequently tip over.
The foundation and plumbing had been completed roughly a month prior to the structure being delivered. Costing $101,000, funds were obtained through a land and water conservation grant originally set for the construction of a baby/toddler pool. Williamson said he felt the need for a restroom facility outweighed the need for an additional pool at this time and processed a request that was approved to change the fund's usage.
As is common with park restroom facilities, the structure is not heated and will be closed and winterized once the weather turns cold.
"We'll leave it open as long as we can to serve the community," Williamson said.
An added use of grant funds included the instillation of additional parking lot lighting aimed at addressing security and safety concerns by those utilizing the pool and park.
"I want the county park to be Putnam County's shining park," Willamson said. "Cabell has Ritter Park. I want this to be a destination point for families."
