Hurricane moves ice skating rink indoors

December 04, 2008 @ 12:00 AM

HURRICANE, W.Va. -- Wet, wintry weather won't be a problem for those looking for outside fun this season as Valley Park's ice skating rink moves under roof and more than doubles in size.

Stella Nance, ice arena coordinator, said community turnout has been high with roughly 200 skaters frequenting the rink since its opening Nov. 1. The outdoor rink was relocated this season to the park's newest covered shelter area, which means skaters will stay dry no matter the weather. Along with the rink's solid dry surface material, "It's ice skating without getting wet," Nance said.

"It's twice as big now. And this way, if it rains, it's not going to affect you if you skate. That's the main reason it was moved. It's perfect," she added. The rink was located near the park's tennis courts last year.

At the cost of $12,000, the synthetic surface of the rink went from 50 by 20 feet to 55 by 45 feet. Heated restrooms and a snack bar are among other amenities.

Skating lessons are being offered Mondays during three different sessions by Rob Murdock, a former minor league hockey player. Classes are for all skating levels and run $65 for a six-week course. Skate rental is included.

The rink is also available for birthday parties and special events.

The cost for the general public to skate is $5 per person with $3 for skate rental. You may use your own ice skates if you like. Skate sharpening is available for $4. For groups of 10 or more, there is not a skate rental fee.

Through December, the rink will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Starting in January, hours will be 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday. The season will close March 14.

Hand stamps can be given at no extra charge for those who wish to leave and return to the rink later the same day.

A New Year's Eve special skate session is planned from 6 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
