Clairebells offers frozen yogurt with a twist

Aug. 09, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HURRICANE, W.Va. -- Located on Teays Valley Road, Clairebells is a self-serve frozen yogurt stand with a twist. In addition to offering a mix of flavors and toppings, the small shop also serves hot dogs and sandwiches. The shop also offers chocolate-covered strawberries, yogurt pies, and "yo-shakes" milkshakes made with frozen yogurt.

Clairebells offers Yo-Cream and Honey Hill brands of frozen yogurt. Flavors include cake batter, white chocolate mousse and peanut butter. The shop also features sugar-free flavors, and dairy-free sorbets. The self-serve yogurt starts at 48.9 cents an ounce. Clairebells offers a wide mix of more than 70 toppings for yogurt including fresh fruit, cereal and candies such as "Popping Boba" and "Sour Patch kids."

The eatery is celebrating its one year anniversary in September.

"We started looking for a building in the Valley in June. This building was brand new, so we chose it so we could construct the shop the way we wanted," Sandi Elswick, co-owner of Clairebells, said.

The small frozen yogurt shop is working on fundraisers with Winfield Middle School and Winfield High School in the fall. It also has a distribution deal with Waves of Fun in Hurricane.

Clairebells lunch options include hot dogs topped with homemade chili and slaw, homemade chicken salad, and beef barbecue.

"Since we weren't a franchise we wanted to do some things to make us stand out," Elswick said. "We wanted to offer some food that was homemade that we could put our own special touch on. All our food is a premium food and we use ingredients like Nathan's Hog Dogs and we grill our own chicken for the chicken salad. One of the things that set us apart from some of the frozen yogurt chains is that we use a real yogurt base, not a powdered mix. It still has the live probiotics and live active cultures."

The store plans to expand some of the food offerings in colder months.

"In the winter months we're going to gear up on the hot meals some more with homemade soups and some heartier meals, Mark McCoy, co-owner of the store, said. "We are also planning on adding some additional deserts to the menu. We added the yogurt shake to the valley because it's very unique. It's lower fat than a traditional milkshake, but with much more flavor than a milkshake made with soft serve ice cream."
