Nominations Being Accepted for Mayo Lester Service Award

The committee for the Mayo Lester Community Service Award is now taking nominations. The award is to be presented by the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce at their annual dinner in January and is named for the late Mayo Lester. He was the first Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Putnam County Chamber in 1979 and was also the first recipient of the award given to him for his work toward the development of the Hurricane Community Park. The 2008 recipient was Karen Haynes.

Some of the criteria used to select the award recipient includes extraordinary amount of devoted time, energy and personal resources for the betterment of a Putnam County project. It is not necessary for the recipient or the nominee to be a member of the Chamber. Nominations must include background information on the nominee and details of how this person has met the complete criteria. The person submitting the nomination should list their name and phone number so they can be contacted if additional information is needed. Nominations must be received no later than Friday, December 4.

MAYO LESTER COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

The Mayo Lester Community Service Award was the first annual program established by the Chamber of Commerce. Given annually to an individual who has excelled in community service to Putnam County, the award was named after one of the Chamber's founding members and first Chairman, the late Mayo Lester.

To receive the award an individual's personal attributes and contributions to the community may include, but not be limited to:

Personal involvement in county-wide or local civic improvement projects.

Active participation in community organizations.

Support of a community project(s) and/or organization(s). Support may include personal involvement or financial contribution, but not necessarily membership in a particular organization.

An example of what a citizen and community leader should be in donating time, energy and personal resources for the betterment of their community.

Showing some degree of personal sacrifice for an organization or toward the accomplishment of a community project.
