Man dies after being struck by train Tuesday

TEAYS VALLEY -- A man was killed after being struck by a train about 3 p.m. Tuesday near the South Poplar Fork Creek Road in Putnam County, according to a Putnam County 911 dispatcher.

The man's name was not released as of Wednesday.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Department is investigating.

Breakfast with Santa at Applebees on Nov. 21

TEAYS VALLEY -- Winfield High School's General Admission Show Choir invites you to be among the first to share your wish list with Santa.

A Breakfast with Santa is planned for 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Teays Valley Applebees. Cost is $5, and all proceeds will benefit the show choir's activities.

Parents are urged to bring a camera to snap photos of their children with Santa.

Democratic Women to hold Thanksgiving luncheon

HURRICANE -- The Putnam County Chapter of the West Virginia Federation of Democratic Women will hold its annual Thanksgiving Appreciation Day Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21 at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club.

Lunch $10 per person. Participants are asked to bring a door prize.

Pesticide education class planned for December

WINFIELD -- A two-hour pesticide education class is planned for early December.

The WVDA-sanctioned class is geared toward pesticide applicators who use restricted pesticides; by law, they must take a total of 10 hours of WVDA-sanctioned education classes every three years.

The upcoming program will begin at 7 p.m. on Dec. 7 at the Old Putnam County Courthouse (Room 202) in Winfield. Those who attend this program will receive five credits toward the renewal of their pesticide license. This program has been approved for credits in Categories 1, 11, 12, and private. To get proper credit for attendance, participants must fill out the sign-in sheet before leaving.

Topics for 2009 Program include: pesticide safety for workers in greenhouses; vegetable pest management; sprayer calibration; use of beneficial insects; management of fire blight; use of pheromones in bed management; and brush control with herbicides.

Putnam parks' light displays begin Nov. 30

HURRICANE -- Putnam County Parks and Recreation's Yuletide in the Park will open Nov. 30 and continue through Jan. 1, 2010.

Animated light displays will be exhibited throughout the park from 6 to 9 p.m. nightly. There will also be a Toyland at the Bath House Lobby, Santa, caroling, wagon rides and more.

The synthetic ice rink will open for the season on Nov. 27. Lessons will also be available.

Putnam parks to host Reindog Parade on Dec. 5

HURRICANE -- Putnam County Parks and Recreation and the Hurricane Valley Community Center will host the annual Reindog Parade on Saturday, Dec. 5.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., and the parade begins at 10 a.m. at the Hurricane Valley Community Center by the wave pool.

Registration fee is $10, which will go toward the new Putnam County Animal Relief Fund to build a new shelter. Prizes will be given.

West Teays Elementary to host craft fair on Dec. 5

TEAYS VALLEY -- The West Teays Elementary School in Hurricane will host its ninth annual Craft Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m on Saturday, Dec. 5.

Admission is free and more than 50 vendors will offer their goods for sale.

Turkey Day Workout scheduled for Nov. 26

SCOTT DEPOT -- Tri-County YMCA will sponsor its 10th Annual Turkey Day Workout on the morning of Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 26.

The YMCA will be closed the rest of the day for the holiday, but will open from 8 until 10 a.m. for those who want to burn off some calories before their Thanksgiving meal.

The Wellness Center and racquetball courts will be open during this time. A special aerobics class will be held from 8:15 until 10 a.m. in the gym.

A $5 fee is charged to everyone coming to the YMCA this day. The money raised will be donated to the Scholarship Fund at the Tri-County YMCA. The event is open to everyone in the community.

Christian Athletes hosting Sports Auction on Dec. 8

CHARLESTON -- The Fellowship of Christian Athletes will have its ninth-annual fundraising Sports Auction on Dec. 8 at St. George Orthodox Church at the corner of Lee and Capitol Streets in Charleston. A silent auction will open at 5:30 p.m. and the live auction will begin at 7 p.m. There will be a $5 entrance fee. Heavy Hors d'oeuvres will be furnished by Chic-Fil-A. There will memorabilia for auction from professional athletes and teams including, but not limited to, NBA, NHL, NFL and NASCAR. There will also be non-sports items for bid.

Money raised will benefit FCA programming in Putnam and Kanawha county schools.

Teays Valley Church of God Hosts Fall Craft Show

SCOTT DEPOT -- The Teays Valley Church of God in Scott Depot invites all local crafters to participate in a Fall Craft Show and hot dog sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21.

Navel oranges, tangelos, tangerines, grapefruit, mixed boxes and fruit baskets are available fresh from Florida.
