Chief reiterates locking doors to prevent thefts
HURRICANE, W.Va. -- Hurricane Police Chief Mike Mullins is reiterating his call for residents to make sure their homes are locked to help prevent burglaries and thefts.
Over the weekend, an unlocked home in the 100 block of Caroline Circle was entered through a patio door during the early morning hours, allowing a thief to make off with a laptop computer and some beer. The residents' dog was let out of the house, too, and was found wandering the neighborhood the next morning, police said.
This is not the first time that people have entered unlocked homes and vehicles in the area, Mullins said. There's no sign of a decrease in these crimes if people continue trusting that, "It won't happen to me," he said.
Mullins said the police department has literature available to help residents make their homes more secure. "But it won't make any difference if people don't use common sense," Mullins added.
