Kirby of Saint Albans named as Gamer of the Week
Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and the Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week's "Gridiron Gamer of the Week" award to Drew Kirby of St. Albans High School.
The St. Albans High School Red Dragon Football team has had an up-and-down season for the 2009 campaign. The Red Dragons currently stand with a record of 2-7 going into the final game this week. However, last week, the Red Dragons pulled out a 23-14 win over close rival Winfield High School.
A glimpse from the future was seen as freshman Drew Kirby ran for 135 yards and 2 touchdowns on only 11 carries.
When asked about his success, Drew points to only one thing. Drew says, "My success can be summed up in Philippians 4:13: 'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.'"
Drew has enjoyed success this year, fighting his way into the starting lineup and becoming one of the main contributors on the team. Drew says, "We really have one of the best coaching staffs in the state. I learned real quickly that if I work hard in the offseason and in the weight room, then they would give me a fair shot."
St. Albans head coach Derrick Christian says, "Drew is a hard worker both on the field and off the field. He puts his heart and soul into both practice and games, and you can really see that on the field."
The Red Dragons and Coach Christian look forward to continuing their success next year. Coach Christian says, "We really want to finish this season out with a win, and that will give us some momentum going into next year. We'll have Drew back as a sophomore, and we know that he will step up his leadership role on this team."
Drew also looks forward to 2010. Drew says, "I feel like we are really young this year, and we are getting some valuable experience that will help us in the years to come."
Drew compares himself to Houston Texans running back and WVU future Hall of Famer Steve Slaton. "He really hits the hole hard, and he also has the ability to be a game breaker."
Please look for Drew and other local area high school athletes to be named next week's Gridiron Gamer of the Week sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and the Putnam Herald.
