Putnam County parks closer to getting new sign

June 29, 2008 @ 11:35 PM

HURRICANE, W.Va. -- Putnam County Parks and Recreation's Valley Park location is moving closer to obtaining a new sign to designate the park's entry.

Costing an estimated $40,000, parks director Scott Williamson said the installation of such a sign along Great Teays Road is long overdue. Valley Park opened in the 1970s.

The design under consideration is an LED-type sign that will have a changing display. Along with park and pool schedules, there may also be general community information.

$20,000 of the funding is coming from a Community Participation Grant approved through the County Commission. Another $21,000 is being split equally between the park, Waves of Fun and the Convention and Visitors Bureau. The process of accepting bids for the project is expected to begin soon.

Though the Department of Highways still has to approve the project because it lies within their right-of-way, no problems are expected, Williamson said.

"The main issue is to ensure that the sign does not impede the view of drivers as they are exiting the park drive onto the main roadway," he said.
