Aug. 16 events to benefit Hurricane marching band
HURRICANE, W.Va. -- The Hurricane High School Band is asking the community for support as its members look ahead to the 2008 competition season.
The band, which has about 60 members, will hold a yard sale and car wash from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, in the high school parking lot to raise funds to help cover the cost of uniforms, competition fees, instruments, band camp and gas for its equipment truck. Concessions will be available during the event, including hot dogs, drinks and snacks.
Carrie Howell, Hurricane High School Band Boosters vice president/publicity chairman, said this is a significant fundraising event each year for the organization because it helps keep the cost of participating in the band to an affordable level for students and their families. Though fees are roughly $400 per person, without the additional funds raised during these types of events, the cost would be even higher, meaning many students would not be able to participate.
Howell said that under the direction of Sam Leffingwell Jr., the Hurricane High Band competed against nearly 60 schools from six states. The band finished the competition season by performing in the U.S. Scholastic Band Association National Championship in Baltimore, Md. The concert band also performed for the West Virginia Legislature and received superior ratings at the West Virginia Band Festival.
The band will serve as the 2008 Honor Band at the Mountain State Forest Festival on Oct. 4.
Anyone interested in donating any items to be sold in the yard sale or contributing to the band by way of a tax-deductible donation should contact Carrie Howell by calling 304-562-0419.
