Hurricane runner awarded Gatorade Cross Country honor

HURRICANE -- Hurricane High School senior champion runner Alex Dent has been awarded the Gatorade West Virginia Girls Cross County Runner of the Year award for 2009-2010.

Dent, only the second West Virginia girl to win the award for cross country, was recognized for her outstanding athletic ability, strong academic achievement and exemplary character.

Dent holds the Class MA state title and was the fastest West Virginia competitor in the Foot Locker South Regional Championship; in addition, she placed first in the Mountain State Athletic Conference Championship.

The Gatorade program recognizes one winner in every state and the District of Columbia in the area of high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, and track and field. Dent is only the second girl to win in the area of girls cross country.
